West Sydney man sobs over $1.38 million Father’s Day Keno win
A daily game of snooker with his brother in law at Mt Pritchard District Community Club on Father’s Day has turned an Edensor Park retiree into an overnight millionaire, literally bringing him to tears.
The father of three and grandfather of two, who lost his wife to cancer almost five years ago, had just finished playing snooker when he went to check his Keno numbers, only to discover he’d won a whopping $1.38 million.
Club Gaming Manager, Eric Maloney, said the man broke down and began sobbing after being told of his 10 from 10 number win.
“He was so taken aback that he literally went to tears,” Eric said.
“I think it was a present for Father’s Day,” the man said later after recovering from the shock of the win.
He said he had lost his home a few years ago and would definitely buy another house, as well as try to help some of the refugee community with the money.
The man’s brother in law said the winner was nothing but deserving, having assisted many Assyrian Christian refugees who had fled Iraq since the war began in 2003.
The man, who is President of the Assyrian Sports and Cultural Club, came to Australia himself as a refugee 24 years ago from Kuwait, where he had lived for more than two decades.
“He deserves it because he’s such a nice man; always helping people. Over the years, he’s helped many refugees who have come to Australia.”
The man’s brother in law said the pair, both retirees and club members, played snooker and a game of Keno at the club most days.
“Almost every day we are playing snooker. Yesterday, we finished a game and I said ‘It’s time, let’s go’,” he said.
“So we went downstairs and I was looking for him, and I saw him standing at the counter waving at me. I said ‘What’s happened?’ He couldn’t talk.”
He said his brother in law always played the same numbers - 5,6,10,15,16,26,46,50,66,76 - twice picking nine from 10 numbers and winning $10,000 each time.
The man is the fifth NSW Keno millionaire so far this year, following on from a Raymond Terrace couple who scooped $1.48 million at The Bradford Hotel, Rutherford on Friday 24 July.
In total, Keno gives away over $26 million in Keno winnings every month in New South Wales.
