Collary couple win $231,000 on Father’s Day to remember
Father’s Day doesn’t get much better than winning $231,000 on Keno and giving it to your kids - at least according to a Collaroy couple who did just that on Saturday 6 September at the Pittwater RSL Club.
The couple were at the club celebrating the day in the absence of their adult children, who were in Bali together at the time, and couldn’t believe it when the ninth number dropped into sight, earning them a nine from nine number jackpot.
“We were so shocked we thought it couldn’t be real,” the woman said. “My husband thought there were only eight (of our numbers), and I said ‘look, there’s the ninth’.”
“We just love playing Keno; we love watching the numbers - but you never expect you’re going to win,” the man said. “It was a hell of a shock.”
‘We’ve got two grown up children - it’s really great for them,” the woman said of the win. “That was the most exciting thing; telling them,” she said.
“We’re just so happy we can give some money to our kids,” her husband agreed.
But while they’ll be helping out their son and daughter, they’ll also be spending some on themselves, with plans to buy a new BMW and a Classic Jaguar.
Interestingly, it was a win that might never have been.
“We love Keno so much that we play it every second week,” the woman said. “It was an off week, so we shouldn’t have even been there,” she said.
The husband and wife team, who work part time and have been members of the club for “years and years”, have been playing the same nine numbers for just as long - 1,5,6,10,12,28,75 and 80.
The day they won, they played twenty $1 games each - a total outlay of just $40.
